We quantify and measure
behavioral health
Data Instrumentation + Predictive Models = Better Outcomes

Since 2011, our team team of psychiatrists, computer scientists, data scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists has been involved in measuring behavioral health conditions and detecting patterns through digital devices and sophisticated data analyses.

BioTrends is a HIPAA / HITECH cloud platform that enables the evaluation and treatment of behavioral health conditions across all patient populations through intelligent journaling and automated delivery, scoring and analysis of hundreds of standardized assessments and therapy worksheets updated for DSM-5 and ICD-10.

Groundskeeper is a go no-go task developed for a set of digital blocks that the participant manipulates. Play of this "Whac-A-Mole" style game is tracked through several sensors in the devices, which provides a new and innovative approach for accurately measuring conditions associated with attention.

  • 2011

    Computation Meets Behavior

The idea to more accurately measure behavior through technology began over dinner between a programmer and a psychiatrist in Minneapolis. This is based on the ubiquity of sensors, the data they can collect and the behavior they represent.

  • 2012

    Development and Pilot

The team spent the year developing Groundskeeper, instrumenting the cubes to collect data associated with attention, and building the algorithms to analyze this novel data set. We partnered with several clinics and the University of Minnesota to pilot the system.

  • 2013

    Pilot Results

The pilot study from Groundskeeper showed high predictive accuracy in detecting ADHD, Depression and Anxiety. These results were published in Games for Health Journal and featured by a number of news orgnizations. We also flew around the country and presented at a number of conferences along with picking up a few awards for innovation.

  • 2014

    Back in the Lab

While the results were promising, we determined more clinical evidence was required and so ramped up Phase One and then Phase Two trials in 2014. Research sites included a number of partners including psychometric testing centers, Macalester College and Johns Hopkins University.

  • 2015

    Research and New Development

While research continues with Groundskeeper at Syracuse University, Macalester College and other partners, we developed and launched BioTrends. The underpinnings for this HIPAA/HITECH compliant cloud platform was originally developed to optimize the clinical research process.

  • 2016

    Live with Customers. New Research.

BioTrends has onboarded dozens of customers, ranging from traditional health systems to the fastest growing telehealth companies. We also published new research in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology.
